Boro Park Center Senior Arts Program

Creativity, Connection, and Wellbeing for Older Adults

Since 2024, ALT Alliance has partnered with Boro Park Center to provide arts and crafts workshops for older adults in a rehabilitation and skilled nursing community. Through accessible creative activities, the program promotes social connection, self-expression, and emotional wellbeing among senior participants.

Program Overview

Over nine workshop sessions, participants explored a variety of accessible creative activities including clay sculpting, origami bird-making, tote bag printing, pipe cleaner flower-making, and seasonal celebrations. Activities were intentionally designed to be approachable regardless of prior artistic experience or physical ability.

Art as Connection

Workshop themes followed seasonal changes and holidays, helping participants stay connected with the outside world and experience the passage of time through shared creative experiences. Beyond art-making, the program fostered companionship, reduced feelings of isolation, and encouraged emotional expression.

Key Learnings

01.

Guided Creativity Builds Confidence

Participants were more comfortable engaging in creative activities when examples and step-by-step demonstrations were provided. Familiar formats helped increase participation and confidence.

02.

Repetition Encourages Engagement

Repeating workshop formats across multiple sessions allowed participants to build familiarity and confidence, resulting in stronger engagement over time.

03.

Language Accessibility Matters

Seniors were significantly more engaged when communication occurred in familiar languages. Language accessibility proved to be an important factor in participation and community connection.

Looking Forward

The success of the Boro Park workshops demonstrates how arts-based programming can support healthy aging, social connection, and emotional wellbeing. ALT Alliance continues to explore opportunities to expand creative engagement initiatives for older adults and underserved communities.
