ALT Alliance Concludes NYCxDESIGN 2026 Exhibition Exploring Fashion, Sustainability, and Public Responsibility
As an official exhibition of NYCxDESIGN Festival 2026, Who Pays for Our Clothes? brought together contemporary art, sustainability research, and public engagement to examine the environmental and social impacts hidden within the fashion industry.
Art Meets Sustainability Research
Developed through interdisciplinary collaboration with sustainability researchers and academic contributors, the exhibition applied the framework of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to explore the journey of clothing—from raw material extraction and manufacturing to consumption and disposal. Through sculpture, documentary photography, and interactive installation, visitors were invited to reconsider the true cost of everyday fashion.
Public Engagement and Audience Research
Beyond the artworks themselves, the project incorporated pre- and post-exhibition surveys to explore how artistic experiences influence public understanding of sustainability. Preliminary findings suggested increased awareness of supply-chain impacts, producer responsibility, textile waste, and the shared role of consumers, brands, and governments in addressing environmental challenges.
Featured Artists
The exhibition featured works by Wei-Chen Lou, Mingze Gao, and Qiuchi Chen. Through documentary photography, immersive sound installation, and large-scale sculpture, the artists explored themes of labor, ecological ethics, material circulation, waste systems, and humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world.
By bringing together contemporary art, public engagement, and sustainability research, Who Pays for Our Clothes? created a space for dialogue around responsibility, material culture, and the future of fashion. The project reflects ALT Alliance’s ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful conversations at the intersection of art, technology, policy, and community engagement.
