Program Overview

This workshop invited senior residents at Boro Park Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing to create personalized bird wind chimes using paint, decorative gems, and colorful hanging ornaments.

Designed with accessibility in mind, the activity encouraged participants to explore creativity at their own pace while strengthening fine motor skills, confidence, and social interaction. Through guided support and open-ended artistic choices, each participant created a unique artwork to display in their room or take home.

Guided Creativity

Unlike younger participants, many seniors initially hesitated to begin decorating their birds. Rather than lacking creativity, many simply needed encouragement and examples before feeling comfortable making artistic decisions.

Once volunteers demonstrated simple techniques and reminded participants that there were no “right” or “wrong” choices, residents quickly began experimenting with colors, stickers, and patterns. By the end of the workshop, every bird reflected its maker’s unique personality.

Building Confidence Through Making

Many participants required assistance with fine motor tasks such as threading strings and tying knots. Volunteers worked one-on-one whenever needed, allowing every resident to successfully complete the project.

More importantly, participants experienced the satisfaction of creating something beautiful with their own hands. Many proudly displayed their finished birds, while others chose to hang them on their wheelchairs or bring them back to their rooms.

Community Impact

Although the workshop focused on creating individual artworks, it naturally encouraged conversation and shared celebration.

Residents admired one another’s designs, exchanged compliments, and proudly presented their finished birds during the closing showcase. The activity transformed a simple craft session into a joyful community experience built around creativity and connection.
